AFC West won’t be a cakewalk for Broncos to win sixth consecutive division title The Broncos have owned the playground that is the AFC West for the last half-decade.Patrick Peterson Jersey The rest of the division has fought just to get a ride on the slide. The division crown still goes through Denver, but with training camp near, the competition from top to bottom is likely to be the best since 2013 when three AFC West teams made the playoffs.Aqib Talib Jersey While the rest of the NFL was snatching players from the defending Super Bowl champion Broncos, the Raiders, Chiefs and Chargers were loading up to overtake them. Kansas City has been the toughest competition for the Broncos of late,Dez Bryant Jersey having finished second in the division each of the past three seasons. The Chiefs’ top free-agent signing is offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz. They drafted Mississippi State defensive lineman Chris Jones, who should be an immediate contributor.Jason Pierre-Paul Jersey But the Chiefs’ biggest additions will be the return of their best players — running back Jamaal Charles and outside linebacker Justin Houston — whose 2015 seasons were shortened because of knee injuries. The Chiefs and Broncos split their annual two-game series last season. Each team has a tough defense and an offense that likes to run the ball. If not for its 1-5 start,Jordy Nelson Jersey Kansas City might have overtaken the Broncos for the AFC West crown last season. Kansas City should be a contender again. Oakland appears to have had the best offseason of the AFC West teams. The Raiders’ young roster,Greg Olsen Jersey led by quarterback Derek Carr, wide receiver Amari Cooper and outside linebacker Khalil Mack, received an infusion of talent from free-agent acquisitions, including cornerback Sean Smith,Jimmy Garoppolo Jersey linebacker Bruce Irvin, offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele and safety Reggie Nelson. The Raiders loaded up on defense in the draft, selecting hard-hitting safety Karl Joseph and pass rushers Jihad Ward and Shilique Calhoun in the first three rounds.Kam Chancellor Jersey The Raiders’ talent, particularly on defense, should allow them to compete with the Broncos and Chiefs for the division title. But Carr must show he can lead the Raiders to the playoffs.Antonio Brown Jersey Oakland was 7-9 last season and hasn’t made the playoffs since 2002. San Diego has the most holes of the AFC West teams — but its quarterback, Philip Rivers, may still be the best in the division.A.J. Green Jersey The Chargers’ passing game should be feared. San Diego’s 4-12 record last season largely was the result of a defense that couldn’t stop a nose bleed. The running game also stumbled. Second-year tailback Melvin Gordon will have to be better. Joey Bosa, the No. 3 overall draft pick, could have double-digit sacks as a rookie pass rusher. Denver will have its hands full figuring out how to win with a new starting quarterback. The Broncos have won the AFC West the past five seasons. A sixth consecutive division title is possible, but it’s no longer taken for granted.
